For years, much of the industry’s attention has focused on fast charging, thermal runaway, and high-temperature operation. But maintaining battery performance in cold environments is one of the defining real-world constraints on EV usability, reliability, and customer acceptance.

What makes this discussion particularly timely is that battery heating is no longer a simple subsystem challenge. The architecture and cost pressures shaping next-generation EV platforms are forcing OEMs to rethink how battery heating is delivered altogether.
As pack designs move toward larger-format cells, simplified cooling architectures, lower system cost, and higher charging performance, the challenge becomes far more difficult:
“How do you maintain charging speed, thermal uniformity, and battery performance in cold conditions — without adding excessive weight, complexity, packaging burden, or energy consumption?”
This session examines how modern battery heating technologies, including ultra-thin heater pads and self-regulating PTC systems, are being deployed to improve cold-weather charging and pack-level thermal control while balancing efficiency, safety, and scalability.
Mike brings a practical perspective from Caliente, LLC, focused directly on solving thermal challenges in demanding operating environments. The discussion goes beyond theory and looks at the real engineering compromises OEMs are now facing as cold-weather performance increasingly becomes tied to customer satisfaction, fleet uptime, warranty exposure, and long-term battery degradation.
